Wearing animal hides is not modern; it goes as far back as the palaeothic times. Investigations have found paintings in caves showing mankind wearing animal skins. These are a far cry from what we wear these days however. Skins in the past were treated with ingredients found in nature.
Grey Denim Jacket
When ancient Egyptian tombs were excavated paintings and artifacts were found showing that leather was heavily used straight through out the period. The Egyptian military used animal skin for a collection of things: shields, harnesses, sandles, clothing, and other objects crucial for survival. The ancient Greeks, and Romans also used leather for the same reason. It was the Romans who introduced leather to Europe. British monks become experts in production leather, they sometimes used animal skins for writing on and they were often used on boats. These were called Coracles.
Over the next few centuries leather manufacturing rapidly extensive and leather jackets began to be produced. By the medieval period the majority of towns included a tannery. Though still standing the majority of these tanneries are now not used for their original purpose. If you look at a street name you can sometimes see evidence of what once was "Leather Lane" or "Tanner Road" etc.
The 20th century arrived and as well as being used in both World Wars referred to as leather bomber jackets they became cool and thanks to the cinema became iconic. The most determined proof of this is in the film The Wild One; Marlon Brandos character wore a leather biker jacket straight through out and is now a staple image of the film itself. Films like this popularised leather jackets especially amongst the American & British youth. A Leather jacket was in everybody's wardrobe including the "greaser" subculture, Can you fantasize The Fonz without thinking of his equally iconic jacket?
Many more examples of iconic leather jackets followed especially towards the end of the century. From the T-800 Character in the Terminator movies, to the longer 3/4 length trench coat style worn by Keanu Reeves in the Matrix.
